July 2, 2020
It's a new year!
Every year we anticipate this rollover to July 1. It's a new year in terms of courier data! The time
when we, once again, begin looking at the past year to inform the courier renewal process. July 1,
2020 through June 30, 2021. This is the data we use.
First, we take the ILL data from various resource-sharing networks (Prospector, Marmot, SWIFT,
AspenCat), and we aggregate those numbers into a massive spreadsheet, with loan and borrow detail
for every single participating library, school and academic institution. Error checking, report
generation and graphs, reconciliation -- this is fun stuff.
Then, we start running cost-model projections. So many variables! 3, 4 and 5-day stops, high volume
ILL tables... Ultimately this helps us land in the sweet spot -- where every participating
organization is contributing, where CLiC's financial subsidy of the statewide infrastructure helps
foot the overall "system" costs (such as the contract with Western Peaks Logistics, thousands of
gray bins, and CLiC's overhead costs to manage the service). Soon, we'll be starting with the
renewal cycle and logistics with annual courier agreements.
As usual, we are striving to have courier pricing all worked out and locked down by late August
into early September. And as always, we welcome your questions.
